San Francisco Drag King contest #13 2008! This year Electro came by in his busy schedule to PERFORM once again in SF! We were not disappointed. This year the contest winners were a bit of a shock as many thought Del Torro was a shoo-in! The night was filled with drag!
Project Lame Way March 2008!It was glamours! it was packed! There were stars and regular folks. We were there to see what local designers could do with a couple of beat up vintage dresses. The theme was exploration and adventure. Fun all around and we were all super excited to watch Project Runway and see Chritian WIN!! It was totally FIERCE!
Folsom Street Fair 2007!! How can anyone miss this! The weather was gorgeous, lots of skin and my favorite performer KELLY! All the way from LA. Actually, it took me forever to get outta bed, dressed and my sorry ass to the fair. But I did it! :)
Peaches Christ at the De Young Museum ! Who could believe that cool San Francisco Drag would end up in a Museum?? SF Drag is hot and trendy. yippee. I loved the setting. I loved the lighting. The sound was not all that great unless you were directly in front of the band. There were kids! There were grandparents! There were all sorts of folks there.
Charlie Horse at the Cinch with Anna Conda! PodShow was at the Charlie Horse with OJ from the 11th Commandment. Anna Conda became OJ's drag Mother as he gamely tried a bit of lip sync (did he even KNOW the song??!) and a few moves. He was nervous as all git. The rest of the performers were all fab and if they weren't singing they knew how to lip sync! Lots of fun. This is a GREAT drag show and the Cinch is ALWAYS free!
SF Drag King Contest 2007! It was another GREAT year of of drag kinging. The quality was high and Sacramento was well represented! The show was so exciting. Everyone was there! The competition was fierce.
Up Your Alley - Dore Street Fair 2007!! Up Your Alley now has some super marketing machine in place so it is packed, and I mean packed. So sorry this slide show is rather tame. In fact most of the photos come from the dance floor. It sure was hard to shoot. But the weather was nice.
Trannyshack Pagent 2006! Madkats has no idea why everyone and their mother! was NOT at this event? This is the best SF event of the year & you'd be nuts not to make it. This year more & more folks agreed with madkats and came for the glamour! The Celebrities! The performances! The drag! and the music!
Vegas In Space - 15 Year Reunion! Peaches Christ Midnight Mass celebrated 15 years since the premiere showing of the film. This film holds a special place in madkat's heart since the film was developed around a group of performers who worked on a series of shows that played at the 181 Club in the very early 80s. Then there were all the fundraiser's for the film. The world is a better place since the likes of Doris Fish, Tippi and Miss X graced our world!
IDKE 8 was in Austin Texas! The annual International Drag King Extravaganza was in Austin Texas this year and what a great place for a drag king conference. The Kings, Queens, Genderfucks and general outrageous queers took over the city with a vengeance. The local residents didn't seem all that phased about it either. There was Art, Performance, conference sessions, Leslie Feinberg and more incredible performances and spoken word.
Charo! Charo! Charo at the Shack Trannyshack had Charo hosting the Charo look-a-like contest. This was a special event in addition to the regular Trannyshack show. The celebrities came out to compete! There was Jordan L'Moore (who looked the most like Charo -- although L'Moore looked like a younger Charo). Cricket's baby won, Arturo looked scandalous and Pippi looked like a young Ann Margaret! (Hey Heklina - when's the Ann Margaret look-a-like contest??). Land-o-lakes puppy dog was a big hit too. Lot's of photos and yes I edited out a TON! enjoy!
Dore
Alley 2005
It was a hot day for Dore Alley which
meant there was a lot of skin showing. Dore was it's usual
raunchy self with lots of naked men, public sex and girls
in fetish wear. OH! and don't forget the Sisters. It's a
nice small street fair (though getting more and more crowded
every year). Fun to wander and run into old & new friends.
It also feels like a local fair with not too many gawkers.
I'm sure this will change over the next couple of year.
So enjoy it next year!
Peaches
Christ Midnight Mass - Sing-A-Long with Truth or Dare
Who doesn't want to sing along with Madonna in Truth or
Dare? Kimo was there to do the amazing Madona thru the years.
Since we were watching Truth or Dare, Kimo stopped at that
Madonna (which didn't stop people from dressing in the Ray
of Light Cowgirl Madonna). Kimo is amazing and you should
catch her at the Castro Street fair. If you haven't been
to Midnight
Mass - WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???! The best part of the
night is the movie short that Peaches and her gang (including
Heklina & Vinsantos among many many others) make. Go
to check out the movie short and the show -- even if you
don't like the main movie showing. You won't be disappointed!
Pride
2005! madkats was really really sick with a bad
cold, which put a super crimp in going to all the performances
and parties. Madkats made it to the Tranny Stage to catch
the fab Pandora's performance and to see Wood
- San Francisco's latest fabu drag band. This one is a heavy
metal all drag king rockin' band. If you haven't caught
them at the eagle, the dyke march or pride, you'll be able
to rock out to them at the annual SF Drag King Contest in
August. Stay tuned for more info!
Swinging
60's at the Shack! It's been awhile since madkats
has made it to Trannyshack,
but Johnny Kat hosting a tribute to the mod swinging 60's
(not to be confused with the hippie 60's - more glamour
in the mod scene than the hippie one.) The ever beautiful
Chocolate was at the door (I'm not sure if it would feel
like Trannyshack if Chocolate wasn't there). There were
lots of people looking quite spectacular. Johnny Kat's drag
daughter -- Edie was the "Get it GIRL!" and she
was so so fab. After awhile I just couldn't stop myself
from yelling out "GET IT GIRL!!". There was body
paint, Warhol, Laugh-in and more. Thankfully -- it was a
night madkats didn't miss!
Queen
Size's Toga Birthday Bash at the stud!Queen size
is usually or let's put that right - almost always at the
door of the stud. He makes me feel very tiny -- hence I
always call him tiny! It was a fun nite full of people in
Togas with lots of angels abounding. Fun nite for dancing,
eating cake and taking pix. Afterwards it was a wander over
to Cyp to check out the tile work in the bathrooms. Fudgie
has been working with the multitalented Vinsantos (don't
tell me you've missed one of his performances??!!). The
bathrooms are extrodinare! Not to be missed. Check out both
of 'em! Have a fancy cocktail and go into the bathrooms
and check out the art! If anyone complains -- tell 'em it's
San Francisco and gender is just an arbitrary concept!
King
Heat at the Metro in Oakland, CA! What a night
of fabulous performers! There were the kings from Columbus,
OH, a king from Winnipeg, Canada, a king from Salinas and
then local favorites - including Fresh and Simone de la
Gitto from Harlem shake. The rain made me think twice about
crossing the bay bridge but I was sure glad I made the trek.
Luster, Roscoe, Carlos Las Vegas and Junoon were even more
spectacular than on Friday (Carlos' canon went off without
a hitch). They had a huge stage to spread out and a WILD
crowd to keep them going. For once a crowd outside of Columbus
could AWWWWW Suki Suki with the best of them. In fact, they
just started doing the cheer on their own. And here, Luster
thought we Californians were too cool to give out a big
midwestern cheer. Didn't help we had a cheer leader keeping
us going.
King
Heat at the Club Savoy in Santa Clara, CA! Columbus
Ohio's Fast Friday Producer Sile P. Singleton got together
with Winnipeg's Carlos Las Vegas and Junoon from Salinas
to put together a number of shows in the greater Bay Area.
This Friday show was plagued with technical difficulties
(the lights were blown and only ONE industrial lamp lit
the stage) but the performers prevailed and the show was
just so gawd damn HOT! The Transformers and the Fly Boys
joined our out of town guests to give the audience a treat.
Girls
at the Starlight in New Orleans!Xmas Eve (Dec.
24th) in New Orleans. It was cold - VERY cold but the girls
were warm and the night was fun! It did snow the next day
but you never would have known that it was that cold outside.
What a fun way to spend Xmas eve!
Heather
McAlister Benefit with Creamy Goodness! On Dec.
1st, Creamy Goodness with some other performers put together
a kick ass benefit for Heather McAlister. It was a dreary
nite but people still made it out in support for Heather.
We weren't sure she was gonna make it but she did -- looking
gorgeous as usual!
Juliette
Lewis & the Licks! Juliette and the band
came to the Cafe DuNord to rock the house. I was skeptical
and not sure if the whole thing was just some actresses
vanity vehicle, but my friends had heard the band was good.
And they were! The band was tight, well rehearsed and a
whole hella fun! And to see them in a small club with a
friendly staff. The DuNord is starting to get serious about
their bands. This is the place to see bands before they
move on to the larger venues
Halloween
in the Castro The Castro district of San Francisco
swells into a wild and crazy crowd. People throng to the
area for all around the world. Long, long ago people (adults
and kids) came to the Castro in costume. Then the onlookers
began to outnumber those in costume and it all started to
go down hill. This year there were more people in costume
and the local venues got their act together. PEPPERSPRAY
played at the Cafe DuNord where you could take in the crowds
on the street during intermission! Good time was had by
all!
IDKE
6 - Brunch Sunday brunch comes way too soon.
Madkats got there early but had to leave by noon to catch
a plane home. The real performances didn't start until then!
Next time the plane trip won't start so early!
IDKE
6 - Showcase Saturday nite is an overwhelming
extravaganza! There were 29 acts from North America and
Dublin! The number of performers FILLED the stage. Luckily
for us the venue was HUGE -- it sold OUT! The show went
smoothly and everyone was blown away. The photos just don't
do justice to the night!
IDKE
6 - Dragdom Friday nite is a free-for-all and
a chance for people to strut their stuff without the stress
of a large stage and big productions. It also lasts for
hours and hours. Here is a small slice of dragdom. It was
great and there were a lot of old favorites, San Franciscans
and great performers.
MadKats
will be there, will you? Erin O'Neill will be part
of the panel - Documenting
Drag King Culture. This panel is scheduled
to happen on Oct. 15th, Friday at 1:30 pm. Images will be
shown from both O'Neill's fine art series - Kings of
the Road and photos from this website. If you're a Chicago
king & you're interested in being part of the series
Kings of the Road, please drop erin (erin @ eonarts
. com) a line so she can bring enough film! Please say hi!
Castro
street fair and more PEPPERSPRAY! This year,
as last year there was the sugarvalley artists to entertain
and wow us.
Folsom
Street Fair The Folsom street fair was a beautiful
day -- not too hot for leather and not too cold for bare
nakedness! Lots more girls, naked guys and the usual leather
boys!
Unisexy
ONE year anniversary The TARDS made a showing
as the Uni-TARDS for this festive night at Unisexy. We all
missed Suppositori Spelling as she was missing in action
but the rest of the band stepped up to the plate. I mean,
you haven't lived until you've heard "Let's Get Physical"
done punk! Here's to another year of great Unisexy!
What to look for in the new
year on MadKats?
More
of everything we do! Drag! Performances! Queer stuff! Parties!
and more.
